David Mooney

Dr. Mooney serves as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for DoriNano. Dr. Mooney is the Robert Pinkas Family Professor of Bioengineering in the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and a Core Faculty Member of the Wyss Institute at Harvard University. He is also a member of several national academies and has received numerous awards for his research and mentorship. His recent awards include the 2021 International Award from the European Society for Biomaterials and recognition as a Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher, as well as being named one of the top 10 translational researchers in biotech in 2019. He has published over 400 articles with more than 145,000 citations and holds several patents, many of which have been licensed to companies, resulting in successful commercial products. Additionally, he is an active member of major engineering professional societies, serves as an editorial advisor to multiple journals, and participates on several industry and government advisory boards.

Dr. Mooney is a leader in the fields of biomaterials, mechanotransduction, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and immunoengineering. His research focuses on understanding how cells sense signals in their environment and how these signals alter cell behavior. His laboratory develops biomaterials that exploit these signals to regulate specific cells and their functions. Notably, his team was the first to demonstrate in 3D culture that the mechanical properties of a substrate can regulate stem cell fate. They also developed the first implantable biomaterial cancer vaccine containing biochemical cues to recruit and re-educate the immune system to destroy cancer cells. Dr. Mooney's extensive experience in developing biomaterials and immunoengineering technologies is invaluable to DoriNano. His pioneering work in cancer vaccines and drug delivery systems aligns perfectly with DoriNano's mission to translate cutting-edge research into therapeutic applications. His expertise will guide the development of innovative DNA origami-based delivery systems and therapeutic strategies. Additionally, Dr. Mooney vast network within the academic and industrial sectors will be instrumental in fostering collaborations and securing funding for the company's projects.

Dr. Mooney received his BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was advised by Drs. Robert Langer and Donald Ingber. He completed his post-doctoral studies at Harvard Medical School under the guidance of Dr. Joseph Vacanti.
